From Big City Life To A Life In The WildernessWe moved to Ely from separate big cities in search of the same thing: peace, quiet and more meaningful lives. Nine months after meeting on lakeshore, we were married in Scotland and soon after, purchased a parcel of wooded land near Ely, Minnesota.Eric has been building things since he was a kid and moved to Ely to build birch-bark canoes. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau, he built a small, one room rustic cabin on our recently purchased land. No electric. No plumbing. Off the grid. He used the book Sheds, by David Stiles as inspiration for what became the Thoreau WEE CABIN, a 10'x15' wood-cord structure. Friends came to visit and declared "it's so wee" and the WEE CABIN name stuck. Neighbors saw the Thoreau, wanted one of their own, and in 2005 the WEE CABIN Company was established. We feel fortunate everyday that we get to do what we love: Build WEE CABINS for people who want a simpler life in the woods, surrounded by nature, searching for the same things we were: a little peace and quiet, away from the busy, crazy world. The best compliment we get is when our clients ask us to build them another WEE CABIN. We love it when that happens!
